Sydney Sweeney: “I Want to Surprise You With Every Role”

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Sydney Sweeney said on the red carpet at the AFI Fest premiere of her new film Christy this Saturday that she wants to take on surprising roles across a wide range of genres. In recent years, the actress has explored romantic comedy, horror, and action—and now, with Christy, the world of sports.

Christy tells the story of Christy Martin, who met Jim Martin in 1989 and later married him. Christy went on to become the first woman to sign with legendary promoter Don King, and the only female boxer ever to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Though she rose to fame, her personal life was marked by a deeply toxic relationship behind the scenes.

Sweeney told The Hollywood Reporter that she wanted to help bring Christy’s story to the public: “But at the same time, as an actor, it’s a dream to be able to play so many different kinds of characters. That’s why I fell in love with this role—I wanted to look completely different, to lose myself in it, and become someone else.”

She previously revealed that she gained about 14 kilograms (30 pounds) for the role: “So it wasn’t just about learning how to box—I had to memorize every precise movement she made in each fight.”

Sweeney, who will soon appear in Paul Feig’s The Housemaid and in the third season of Euphoria, was asked whether Christy has influenced her future role choices. She replied: “Yes and no. I’m always looking for something completely new—but I want people to go, ‘Sydney Sweeney played that role?’ It’s exciting to push myself, so I’m chasing roles that challenge and thrill me in new ways.”
